The **COunter INTELligence PROgram** (**COINTELPRO**) was an FBI
operation from [1956 to 1971](Timeline_of_the_FBI "wikilink") aimed at
destroying much of the New Left and various counter-culture groups
involved in feminism, environmentalism, anti-racism and socialism.
