The **Federal Republic of Somalia** is a
[liberal](Liberalism "wikilink") [capitalist](Capitalism "wikilink")
[state](List_of_States "wikilink") located in Eastern Africa near
[Djibouti](Djibouti "wikilink"), [Ethiopia](Ethiopia "wikilink"),
[Kenya](Kenya "wikilink"), [Yemen](Yemen "wikilink") and the
[Seychelles](Seychelles "wikilink"). It contains the disputed states of
Somaliland.

## History

### Socialist Somalia (1969 - 1991)

Somalia was ruled by a [Marxist-Leninist](Marxist-Leninism "wikilink")
military dictatorship.

### Civil War (1991 - 2006)

Somalia's socialist government was ousted by several rival clans and a
civil war begun that lasted 15 years.

### Liberal Somalia (2006 - Present)

The civil war started to come to an end and liberal democratic
institutions were set up around the country.
