This article outlines the **contradictions of liberalism**, or the ways
in which [liberal](Liberalism "wikilink") governments contradict their
own values.
## Contradictions
- The [United States of America](United_States_of_America "wikilink"),
the largest liberal country in the world, currently has one of the
the largest prison populations (inflated by largely nonviolent drug
offenses)\[1\] and also provides military aid to 73% of the world's
authoritarian regimes.\[2\]
- The [British Empire](British_Empire "wikilink") preached liberal
values whilst it stole a quarter of the world's land and ran its
colonies like military dictatorships.
- Liberalism repeatedly falls into dictatorship. This has been
experienced in Germany, Turkey, Hungary, Thailand, Guatemala and
Chile.
