**David Rolfe Graeber** (born 1961) is an
|
|
[anarchist](Anarchism "wikilink"),
|
|
[anthropologist](Anthropology "wikilink"), author and a leading figure
|
|
in the [Occupy Movement](Occupy_Movement "wikilink"), credited with
|
|
coining the phrase 'We are the 99%'.
|
|
|
|
## Life
|
|
|
|
### Family
|
|
|
|
David was born into a working class socialist family of Polish, German
|
|
and Jewish descent. His mother was a garment worker and trade unionist.
|
|
Whilst his father was an ambulance driver in the [Spanish Civil
|
|
War](Spanish_Civil_War "wikilink") and print worker.
|
|
|
|
David grew up in New York City, USA in a [co-operative
|
|
housing](Housing_Co-Operative "wikilink") complex, declaring himself an
|
|
anarchist at the age of 16. He became an anthropologist after studying
|
|
at [university](university "wikilink") and spent years doing research in
|
|
the autonomous regions of [Highland
|
|
Madagascar](Highland_Madagascar "wikilink"). He has taught at various
|
|
universities, being fired at several (and kicked out of apartments) for
|
|
his involvement with anarchist politics. He currently lives and teaches
|
|
in London, England. |
