environmental events that have occurred in South America (a region
encompassing the states of

[Venezuela](Bolivarian_Republic_of_Venezuela "wikilink"),

[Ecuador](Republic_of_Ecuador "wikilink"),
[Bolivia](Plurinational_State_of_Bolivia "wikilink"),
[Paraguay](Republic_of_Paraguay "wikilink"),
[Uruguay](Eastern_Republic_of_Uruguay "wikilink"),
[Guyana](Co-operative_Republic_of_Guyana "wikilink"),
[Suriname](Republic_of_Suriname "wikilink") and [French

socialism](Libertarian_Socialism "wikilink").
- 1979: [FEJUVE](FEJUVE "wikilink"), a
[federation](Confederation "wikilink") of [local
assemblies](Democratic_Assembly "wikilink") is formed to provide
support for people in the face of poverty, lack of access to
essential services (such as [water](water "wikilink"),
[electricity](electricity "wikilink"), [paved
roads](Transportation "wikilink"), sewage, garbage collection,
[education](education "wikilink"), [medical care](Health "wikilink")
and so on) rooted in indigenous [Aymaran](Aymara_People "wikilink")
concepts of [mutual aid](Mutual_Aid "wikilink") forms in the city of
El Alto, Bolivia. Where around 40% of the cities population
participates in the [dual power](Dual_Power "wikilink")
organization.
- 1997: The ongoing Second [Mapuche
Uprising](Second_Mapuche_Uprising "wikilink") begins, as
[Mapuche](Mapuche_People "wikilink") across
[Chile](Republic_of_Chile "wikilink") have resisted [environmental
destruction](Ecocide "wikilink") and the theft of traditional
Mapuche lands through militant and revolutionary tactics.
- 2000: The Water War begins in Bolivia, as people participate the
privatization of water access across the country.
- 2001: The legendary [Argentinazo](Argentinazo "wikilink") occurs,
hundreds of workplaces are taken over and run according to the
principles of
[self-management](Workers'_Self-Management "wikilink"),
[strikes](Strike "wikilink") plague the country and people battled
[police](police "wikilink") in the streets in protest of a severe
[economic depression](Capitalist_Crisis "wikilink").
- 2003: The Gas War begins across Bolivia, as people protested the
attempted [privatization](privatization "wikilink") of Bolivia's
massive reserves of [natural gas](Fossil_Fuels "wikilink").
